Paraphrasing Nietzsche

I came across this gem on Mastodon the other day…

The translation of Nietzsche that I read used the word ‘abyss’, which is even cooler:

He who fights with monsters should be careful lest he thereby become a monster. And if thou gaze long into an abyss, the abyss will also gaze into thee.

— Beyond Good and Evil

We have one of these in our house. His name is Raven, but I’m calling him The Abyss from now on. The Abyss leaps out at me from dark corners, ready to claw my face off… and also enjoys cuddles from time to time.
